Crockpot Lentil Wild Rice Comfort Dinner

It’s one of our favorite winter meals for many reasons. It’s warm, hearty, healthy easy and very inexpensive.

Wild Rice

Even thou it’s called “rice,” it is not closely related to traditional rice which is generally smaller, less nutrient-dense and a different color. It has a chewy outer sheath that holds the grain inside. It grows on short stalks in shallow water.

A few benefits of wild rice: high levels of antioxidants, protein, mineral, vitamin, and dietary fiber content, almost all of which are considerably higher than traditional white rice.

It contains potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, folate and zinc. With so many being deficient in various minerals it is nice to see so many contained in wild rice.
An FYI: Nitric oxide is often a concern about white rice but is of no concern to wild rice.

I really like the wild rice from Native Harvest because I prefer it grown here in the USA. But — there are other good brands out there. I am sure you have a favorite.


Lentils date back more than 9000 years, making them one of the oldest food sources known to man. They are an edible pulse (or seed) that belong to the legume family.

They are a rich and inexpensive source of protein, essential amino acids and micronutrients (vitamins & minerals.) Just a few found in lentils are tryptophan, manganese, iron, folate, phosphorus, copper, vitamin B1, and potassium.

Lentils contain more protein than any other plant, making them comparable to red meat, dairy products, fish and poultry.
They may help to control diabetes, improve digestion, help prevent Atherosclerosis, boosts metabolism, and aid in weight management.

Lentil Colors

Common varieties of brown lentils are Indian brown, German brown and Spanish brown. The smallest and darkest (nearly black) – are generally Buluga lentils which boast a rich earthy flavor.

Red lentils are the sweetest tasting and have a nutty flavor. The most well known varieties are Red Chief and Crimson. They cook faster than green and get a bit mushier. (Note: They are really more orange than red)

All colors produce the same or nearly the same in the way of nutrients.

A few differences between the various lentils: #1. Green lentils have a stronger earthy flavor than the red lentils but not as strong as the brown. #2. Red lentils get mushier the longer they cook while the green ones remain firm. #3. Green lentils cost more than red.

A Perfect Match
The combination of wild rice and lentils is nothing short of a perfect match for a hearty, healthy, inexpensive and easy hot meal. It is a favorite winter meal in our house.

Crock Pot Wild Rice and Lentils Recipe

Note: Any single or mix of lentils will work. For this recipe I used a Vegi soup.

6 cups of water (halved) or organic, low sodium vegetable broth.
1/2 C Wild Rice
1 C lentils or a mix
1 C Chopped onion
2 Bay leaf
2 teaspoons raw apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons liquid amino acids (a healthier alternative to soy sauce)

2 Tablespoons fresh chopped or ground sage
1 teaspoon Mrs Dash
Salt & Pepper to taste

Put 2 cups of water, chopped onions and bay leaves in the crockpot. Turn on high until you get a slow boil.
Then: add 1 more cup of water and rice. Plus the sage, Mrs Dash Salt & Pepper.
Continue to cook on high for about an hour.
Then: add 1 more cup of water – the lentils and the ACV.
NOTE: ADD water as needed for desired consistency
Taste test for flavor
Continue to cook on high for about an hour.
Turn it on low and add Amino Acids
Cook till done

You may have noticed the ACV and Amino Acids in the ingredients list. They are my two secret ingredients when it comes to broth for any stew or soup with water as the broth base. While one or both of them sound just wrong to you…. please give it a try. You do not taste either of them but they really do turn bland to FLAVOR.

  1. I love wild rice! My husband, not so much. And although I have never cooked with lentils, we are eating Nutrisystem right now and a lot of their dishes contain lentils. Now I know why! 🙂
